Siem Reap Cambodia: Angkor Wat Experience

The moment you see something that your teacher in grade school keeps on talking because of its beauty. Angkor Wat photos are all over the city when I arrived at Siem Reap. Even before I fly to Cambodia, while doing my research about the city, I always look at some photos of Angkor Wat. That day when I saw its beauty while the sun is peaking at the towers of the temple. I was really in awe when I saw how grand and majestic the Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat is one of the important archaeological site in South-East Asia. Angkor Archaeological Park has a 400 km squared area that holds the grandest and amazing remains of different capitals of the Khmer Empire during 9th to 15th century. Angkor is the largest archaeological site in the world.

I woke up as early as 3AM just to get ready for a day tour to Angkor Archaeological Park and catch sunrise in Angkor Wat. I have booked a tuk-tuk for this tour, he accompanied me to the temples included in Large Circuit tour. FYI there are 3 tours in the Park; small, large and ruins circuit. I only booked Large Circuit because the tour will cover many temples than the others. For the record, I didn’t get to see a picturesque sunrise in Angkor Wat, maybe because of the weather or I’m just not that lucky.

Check out my previous post for the information on what to do before you can visit the Angkor Wat. HERE

The famous of all temples in Angkor Archaeological Park is the Angkor Wat. Hundreds of tourist are waking up early in the morning just to catch the sunrise in Angkor Wat. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy morning when I tried to witness the sunrise in Angkor Wat. But hey, seeing the sun peeking out at the silhouette of the temple is really a great way to start your morning. Yeah?! After catching the sunrise, I began to explore the temple.

Inside of the Temple

The temple was built during the 12th century as Hindu monument, in the late 13th century it was converted to Buddhism. The exquisite bas-relief decoration in every pillars and walls of the temple are really amazing and it really shows the artisan craftsmanship of the people who built the temple. It’s just sad that the locals and tourist are looting and pillaging the remains of the temple, which is evident here. You can see headless statues around, good thing the pillars, walls and towers are still intact. My walk inside the temple made it special whenever I smell the incense in the Buddhist altar.

Outside of the temple

Angkor Wat is the grandest temple among all the temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park. It stands as high as 200 feet and it was divided in several layers. The walls are crafted with bas-reliefs design that shows the different historic Buddhist events like; Battle of Kurukshetra, the Army of Suryavarman II, Heaven and Hell, Churning of the Ocean of Milk, Elephant Gate, Vishnu Conquers the Demons, Khrisna and the demon King, Battle of the Gods and the Demons, and the Battle of Lanka.
